Erykah Badu never ceases to amaze me …

From Artist to Birth Doula, Erykah Badu is now practicing Reiki and therapeutic massages for moms to be. As a mother of three she will be helping other moms deliver their cutie babies naturally. Badu is a spokesperson for the International Center for Natural Childbearing and offers her services free of charge to a small number of clients. …Well, when that time comes she will definitely be getting a call from me!

“When I saw the baby, I cried,” Badu tells People magazine. I knew what I was supposed to do with my life.”

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.”

Be True to Love- A New Vision

During my lovely afternoon break today, I sat outside by the river at my school. The sun was glistening over the water and the ducks were out to play. It was an alluring sight and I felt at peace while reading my current book, “All about love: New Visions” by bell hooks. I was heading to a close on the chapter of Honesty and something attracted my attention so swiftly.

In today’s society I feel as if we are taught to fear the truth, to believe it always hurts. “The truth shall set you free” just does not seem to amount to any substance besides fear. We are taught that by masking these feelings inside and just living we will one day be alright. We are scared sometimes to share how we feel due to the causing damages. bell hooks writes,

“..Bombarded with cultural propaganda ready to instill in all of us the notion that lies are more important, that truth does not matter, we are all potential victims. Consumer culture in particular encourages lies. Advertising is one of the cultural mediums that has most sanctioned lying. Keeping people in a constant state of lack strengthens the marketplace economy. Lovelessness is a boon to consumerism. And lies strengthen the world of predatory advertising. Our passive acceptance of lies in public life, particularly via the mass media, uphold and perpetuates lying in our private lives. In our public life there would be nothing for tabloid journalism to expose if we lived our lives out in the open, committed to truth-telling. Commitment to knowing love can protect us by keeping us wedded to a life of truth, willing to share ourselves openly and fully in both private and public life..”

bell hooks presents the idea of emptiness of love caused by dishonesty, and the idea that is shared with consumerism. advertisements keep us in perpetual desire, in feeling as if we always need something. Lying to us every day, starting from when we were young. If a child is raised without parenting, they only see what consumerism is actively exhibiting to them. It’s a vicious cycle that we are all guilty of at times. But I believe in a different vision…

To know love in any way we have to begin by telling the truth, starting with ourselves. We are the core of it all, and I believe that starting with ourselves we can change others. Have you ever had an encounter with someone and left feeling a sense of connectedness? I definitely have, mostly because I believe we are all connected. The things we want to change within the world sometimes start within ourselves. That magnetic and captivating attitude can travel through souls, through cities, through worlds. It can move us, we can move us.
