Phenomenal Woman, That’s Me

I love embracing my womanhood and wouldn’t have it any other way. I embrace femininity, I love to dress up, and I love that. This is one of my favorite poems, Maya Angelou’s words speak to me on so many levels. It exhibits a woman in every sense of the word- powerful, vivacious, and strong. This is how I have been feeling lately, motivated to reach my highest peak and prove to myself that I can make it. I am passionate about learning about myself and seeing the growth that I am going through. As a woman, I feel extra motivated to rise to the top, and keeping Maya’s words within will guide me to the light. I just know it, I can feel it. Enjoy.

Phenomenal Woman

By Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Accessory Trend: Chokers

One of my favorite pieces of jewelry has to be my vintage gold choker. Chokers have come a long way from the early 90’s! I just love the sophistication they bring to any outfit. I am all about accessorizing an outfit up, but sometimes I like to keep it classic with a nice bold choker and some studded earrings. The choker has been seen on many celebs this fall and even on the fall runways of Vena Cava and Yves Saint Laurent. Whether they are studded, pearled, braided, or jeweled, they are a must have piece for the fall. Open ended chokers are also my new fall fave craze, gotta get my hands on a vintage one. They are so subtly sexy and I am just in love–that will be my mission to find one ..I’ll keep ya’ll updated 🙂

J.Cole for Complex Magazine – My YUM of the Day

J.Cole’s long awaited debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story drops tomorrow. After performing last night at the Roseland Ballroom, charging fans $1 for the recurring theme of “Dolla & a Dream” J.Cole has proved again that his music speaks to people. J.Cole exemplifies the struggle most college graduates go through, which is something that we all can relate too. As a motivation to many in the music industry, J.Cole has proved that with hard work and dedication anything and everything is possible.
Complex’s own Damien Scott, who has a unique perspective of the story seeing that he was Cole’s college friend/roommate, did an online story about him. The article broke down J.Cole’s story from his college days to the progression that not only close friend, Damien, has seen but fans as well. J.Cole produced this album solely by himself which says a lot about the artist. I don’t know about you all but I will definitely be showing my support! He can get the YUM of the day title today 😉

Even though he was still working a bullshit job, and money wasn’t flowing as well as he’d like, he believed in his heart of hearts that he was going to make it. One day I went up to his room to see what he was working on and I saw a bank statement taped to his wall right near his bed. I took a closer look and saw his bank balance with a bunch of handwritten zeroes behind it. “If I keep that number in mind,” he told me, “I’m going to get it. I swear.”

Jermaine says the only reason he started producing was because he couldn’t afford to buy beats when he was younger. It was the same story during his college years. He spent a good deal of his sophomore and junior year chopping up samples and stitching them back together. Cole studied producers like 9th Wonder, Just Blaze, and, of course, Kanye West.

London Fashion Week

After NY, London Fashion Week might have to be my second fave. The eccentric and vibrant fashion is so different yet refreshing to see. Here are some flix of the fashion lovin’ in London. The bottom four pictures are from Topshop Unique- the theme for Spring/Summer 2012 was Ancient Egypt meets sportswear. And the references kept coming -all-seeing eye motifs, gold “body armour” plating, black and gold stripes which recalled Tutankhamen’s death mask, even hieroglyphics on the nails! I love it all, from the bright and fun floral dresses to the Egypt theme! What a range!

The lovely Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani’s RTW Fall 2011 line is the perfect balance between prints/color block/ and my all time fave- menswear. These are some of my favorite looks from her line she unveiled at MBFW 2011. Her line seems more sophisticated with the transition from menswear looks to the all black looks with a hint of gold jewelry to add to the plunging necklines. The fabrication is also exquisite for the fall pieces, Gwen just loves the prints- almost as much as I do 😉 Also, loved the rasta feel with the hats and accessories- taken from the vibe of her Spring collection, which I adore just as well!
